J. A. Michell Engineering Ltd was started by John Michell in the mid-60s, initially concentrating on manufacturing parts for other turntable brands. However, John was quietly developing his business' own place in the history of turntable designs.
In the 1980s, with the goal of isolating the sensitive parts of the turntable from sources of vibration and mechanical noise, John designed a suspended turntable with a floating pendulum sub-chassis and an ingenious oil-pumping inverted main bearing, which advanced vinyl playback far beyond that of the competition. John sadly passed away in late 2003, but not before ensuring Michell’s future, under his family’s steady management, was assured.
Today Michell designs and manufactures a suite of turntables, tonearms, cartridges & phono stages that offer music lovers the opportunity to experience high-end analogue audio at a very affordable price.
And we are pleased to announce that Basically Sound are now officially Michell retailers.
We have been regularly servicing their turntables for some years and have even dealt with some of their earlier designs including an example of the infamous Transcriptors Hydraulic Reference turntable; yes, the one that featured in the film A Clockwork Orange. But we have long felt that the Michell brand would complement our existing "analogue" brands and enquired some years ago but were unable to secure the account at that time.
Now that Michell is distributed in the UK by PMC Distribution, the loudspeaker manufacturer's distribution arm, Basically Sound, one of PMC's longest servicing retailers, finally managed to secure the Michell brand for ourselves.
We have started to build our Michell product portfolio and already have examples of some of the Michell range on demonstration now.
